Marije has just joined Discus (HVO-Querido). Her new colleagues have warned: “Your first customer is always tough. Just assume that this will take a lot of time.” At the office she talks to Matthy. He is around 50 years old and addicted to hard drugs. Before this he lived in 24-hour facilities, the prison and all kinds of temporary addresses. Never in a house of his own.

Going to Ikea together

The first challenge is furnishing the house, but surprisingly enough, Marije doesn't have to do anything. Once Matthy calls with a question, but he gets started with odd jobs and buying furniture. Through a friend at the thrift shop he arranges that everything comes to him at home. Marije is surprised: Is this housing supervision, she wonders. She then focuses on the fun part of her new job: she goes to Ikea with Matthy. In addition, she wants to give Matthy a big compliment. Marije has great admiration for his independent performance. At home she makes a card with photos of before and after the home was furnished. In the last photo, Matthy is sitting with his arms spread wide on a brand new second-hand sofa. She writes: Amazing how much work you have already done in the house. May you enjoy it for a long time to come!

Daytime activities

Marije and Matthy are buddies. They regularly walk through the Amsterdam forest together, while Matthy tells her about his noisy life. Every now and then Marije gives him a little push. For example, if he hasn't done much during the day for a few weeks, she will visit him. “Isn't it time to…” Matthy nods. “Yes, you are right. We'll see." In the following week he visits the community center. “Can I do something for you?” He makes an appointment and shortly afterwards can start working as a concierge at the community center. He shows visitors the way. Matty is doing well. Marije's little moves always ensure that he quickly springs into action. But actually they are not even necessary. Even without her encouragement, Matthy chooses his moments to get around people and make something of his life.

It'll be fine

After a while Matthy also realizes very well how energetically he is doing. The card from just after the move is still on his mantelpiece. Perhaps it will help him realize that he is now operating completely independently. He didn't say much about it before. Now it is. When Marije asks: “Is it time to clean up?” he looks at her and says: “No Marije it will be fine, it will be fine.”
