When a homeless person suplies for Discus housing first, it takes at least a couple of months befor he or she will receive the key to the future home. This is mostly a time for insecurely for the one waiting. Am I really going to get a house? A lot of furture cliënt strongly doubt this. To gain trust, Discus organises a kick-off meeting.

Plan your route.

On the drizzly morning of November 12th, the participants of the meeting will first see a video about the Discus way of working. Than a welcome-package is handed out. It consists of a bag, a pullover with the Discus-logo, a pencil and the plasticized roadmap with the locations of all authorities where something needs to be arranged. Each participant is then assigned a contact person, a point of contact for the next few months. In a personal conversation each social worker talks through the roadmap with his of her cliënt. “How do you see your future?" every social worker wants to know. A strongly emaciated homeless man wants to say something about this: “The day after tomorrow I will spend the night with my cousin. I can print the forms with him. ” According to the organisations on the roadmap, each cliënt makes a plan for arranging all administrative matters in the coming period.

A little bit of trust

The morning has been a big succes, despite of the bad wheather. The preparations have cost Valerie a lot of time, but she
feels very satisfied about the results. It has definitely been worth it. All the participants have increased confidence that they will finally have their own home in the near future. And one more fun fact: a lot of the cliënts turn out to have finished all the necessary administration in two weeks!
